What Is Bobtail Insurance and When Do You Need It?

If you're a Washington owner-operator leased to a motor carrier, there's a gap in your coverage that most people don't think about until it's too late.

Your carrier's insurance covers you while you're under dispatch — hauling a load for them. The moment you drop that trailer and drive home, run a personal errand, or head to a truck stop between loads, that coverage stops. Bobtail insurance fills that gap.

What Is Bobtail Insurance?

Bobtail insurance covers your semi truck when you're driving without a trailer — whether you're under dispatch or not. The term "bobtailing" refers to driving a tractor without a trailer attached.

This coverage protects you in situations like:

  • Driving home after dropping a load
  • Heading to a truck stop between loads
  • Driving to a shipper to pick up an empty trailer
  • Running personal errands in your truck

Without bobtail insurance, you're driving an uninsured commercial vehicle in these situations. Your personal auto policy won't cover a semi truck, and your carrier's policy only applies when you're actively hauling for them.

Bobtail vs. Non-Trucking Liability: What's the Difference?

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they're not the same thing.

Bobtail insurance covers you any time you're driving without a trailer — including when you're still technically under dispatch (for example, driving to pick up an empty trailer or repositioning between loads).

Non-trucking liability (NTL) only covers personal use — when you're completely off dispatch and using your truck for non-business purposes.

The practical difference: if you're driving between loads but still under your carrier's authority, bobtail covers you but NTL doesn't.

Most carrier lease agreements specify which one you need. When in doubt, read your lease carefully — or call us and we'll help you figure it out.

When Do You Need Bobtail Insurance?

You need bobtail or non-trucking liability insurance if:

  1. You're leased to a motor carrier. Your lease agreement almost certainly requires it. The carrier's insurance covers you under dispatch; bobtail covers the gaps.

  2. You drive your truck for personal use. Even if you're not leased to a carrier, if you use your commercial truck for personal errands, you need coverage for those miles.

  3. You're between loads. Deadhead miles — driving without a load — are a significant portion of many owner-operators' total miles. Those miles need to be covered.

What Bobtail Insurance Does NOT Cover

Bobtail insurance is not a replacement for primary liability. It does not cover:

  • Hauling a load (that's primary liability)
  • Physical damage to your truck (that's physical damage coverage)
  • Cargo (that's motor truck cargo insurance)

It's a narrow, specific coverage that fills one particular gap. It's also typically very affordable — often $30–$60/month — because it only applies in limited situations.

Do You Need Bobtail If You Run Under Your Own Authority?

If you run under your own authority (not leased to a carrier), you're always operating under your own authority — so the concept of "off dispatch" doesn't apply the same way. You'll need primary liability for all your commercial operations.

However, if you use your truck for personal use outside of your business operations, non-trucking liability may still apply. We'll help you figure out the right coverage for your specific situation.
