Hotshot Trucking Insurance in Washington: What You Need to Know
Hotshot trucking — hauling time-sensitive loads with a pickup truck and gooseneck trailer — has unique insurance requirements. Here''s what Washington hotshot operators need to stay legal and protected.
Hotshot trucking — hauling time-sensitive, smaller loads with a pickup truck and gooseneck or flatbed trailer — has exploded in popularity over the last decade. Lower startup costs, no CDL required for many setups, and the flexibility of running your own operation make it an attractive entry point into trucking.
But hotshot insurance is more complicated than most new operators expect. Here's what Washington hotshot truckers need to know.
What Is Hotshot Trucking?
Hotshot trucking typically involves:
- A heavy-duty pickup truck (usually a 1-ton or larger)
- A gooseneck, bumper-pull, or dovetail trailer
- Smaller, time-sensitive loads that don't fill a full semi
- Faster delivery times than standard freight
Common hotshot loads include oilfield equipment, construction materials, agricultural equipment, and other freight that needs to move quickly.
Do You Need a CDL for Hotshot Trucking?
It depends on your setup. In Washington State:
- Under 26,001 lbs GVWR (truck + trailer combined): No CDL required
- Over 26,001 lbs GVWR: CDL required
- Hauling hazmat: CDL with hazmat endorsement required regardless of weight
Many hotshot operators stay under the CDL threshold intentionally. But even without a CDL, you may still need FMCSA operating authority if you cross state lines for hire.
FMCSA Requirements for Hotshot Operators
If you're hauling freight for hire across state lines, you likely need:
- USDOT number: Required for commercial vehicles in interstate commerce
- MC number (operating authority): Required if you're a for-hire carrier crossing state lines
- Primary liability insurance: Minimum $750,000 for general freight
Even if you're operating intrastate (within Washington only), you may still need a Washington state operating permit and insurance.
What Insurance Does a Hotshot Operator Need?
Primary Liability (Required)
Covers damage you cause to other people and property. FMCSA requires $750,000 minimum for general freight. Most brokers require $1,000,000.
Note: Your personal auto policy does not cover your pickup truck when it's being used for commercial purposes. You need a commercial auto policy.
Motor Truck Cargo Insurance (Usually Required)
Covers the freight you're hauling. Most brokers require $100,000 minimum. Essential for getting loads from legitimate freight brokers.
Physical Damage
Covers your truck and trailer if they're damaged in an accident, stolen, or damaged by weather. If you have a loan on your truck or trailer, your lender requires this.
Non-Trucking Liability
If you're leased to a carrier, non-trucking liability covers you when you're using your truck for personal purposes outside of your carrier's authority.
The Pickup Truck Problem
Here's something many new hotshot operators don't realize: your personal auto insurance policy will not cover your pickup truck when it's being used commercially.
If you're hauling freight for pay and you have an accident, your personal auto insurer will likely deny the claim. You need a commercial auto policy that covers your truck for commercial use.
This is one of the most common coverage gaps we see with new hotshot operators. Don't assume your personal policy covers you — it almost certainly doesn't.
Hotshot Insurance Costs in Washington
Hotshot insurance is generally less expensive than semi truck insurance because:
- Lower vehicle values (pickup vs. semi)
- Lower cargo limits (smaller loads)
- Lower liability limits in some cases
That said, rates vary significantly based on your driving record, years of experience, operating radius, and the type of freight you haul.
As an independent agency, we compare rates across multiple carriers to find the best option for your hotshot operation.
